RECOUNTING JULY: A MONTH THAT WAS NOT TO BE...

Hello Everybody,

How have you been? Trust all's well at your end! Let's do a quick run-down on all that transpired in the month gone by...

Preparations for the 2012 London Olympics are not underway...but they're all set to host the games even today as they are already showcasing the medals to be given to the winners next year! Now cut to last year, same time in August 2010...ten days before the countdown to  the prestigious Commonwealth games we were yet repairing our stadiums, the grounds, the residential complex and in some places construction was still under way! In India, they'd call it the 'jugaad' culture...now go google it out to find out what that means!

After India,America,UK & now Oslo...wounded by terror

In July...it was a double blow as terrorism prevailed when Mumbai -the financial capital of India was once again made a target and a peaceful country as Oslo became the latest victim of this unfortunate attack. In India rampant attacks have become second nature...but until a decade ago,it was something we 'heard' of happening in our troubled heartland, Kashmir and in our neighbourhoods. In India, we are constantly endeavoring to improve our infrastructure but with terror in our backyard and our lack of preparedness to protect the very citizens of our country; you sure know our leaders misplaced priority at the moment... need I elaborate more on that!  And the second shocking terror attack in Oslo was once again a grim reminder that the world was not a safe place any more (I know that's quite a statement I made...)! But if today our family, our friends and the world at large is safe and they are able to reach home and have a meal with their loved ones is not because the government or politicians have done their duty ...but it's because our God good which alone Governs,Guides, protects and ordains every step of ours along the way.
They say a picture speaks a thousand words...now conjecture this; the image of those starving in Somalia which has been affected by famine and on the other hand you have grains lying in the open rotting away, grains in the godowns turning  rancid and our leaders have the gumption to say that if food grains were to be given away free then farmers would not have an incentive to grow..now that's the limit..to rot or not or what??!!
Food Food everywhere..and not a grain to eat!
Now count three and read the statistics which further elucidates my point -

1. India is the world’s largest foodgrain producer but it also has the world’s largest hungry population of over 200 million.
2. We rank 66th among 88 developing and transitional countries on the 2008 Global Hunger Index (GHI-2008), says a report by Washington-based International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)

There's never a dearth of news in India...you take anything and you smell a rat! The illegal mining on the river Ganga, the land scams, food scam, the 2G and 3G scam, the Commonwealth Games scam last year and so many other acts of corruption and nepotism coming to light by the day! In fact ever since mid-last year post the Commonwealth Games scam year till date it has been a 'Scam Year' for India; but if I look at it the other way...I'd say a sweeping cleansing process has begun which will wash and wipe away the muck from the otherwise corrupt system.

We lost a fine young talent...
And two important news around the world besides the bombing and shoot-out in Oslo was the untimely death of pop singer Amy Winehouse, who succumbed to the trappings of drugs and alcohol and joined the ominous 'Forever 27 club'. What a shame...we lost yet another fine talent!

Death of a tabloid...curtains for News of the World
Besides, the news that reckoned for most part of July was the infamous phone hacking scandal in UK which shook the daylights of the Murdoch empire when their oldest tabloids, News of the World took a final bow. And more so knowing the otherwise conservative British society, it was just not the right thing to hack into the personal records privy to the lives of the people.

In fact, British actor Hugh Grant, who has been one of the most high-profile phone hacking victims has even signed a petition outside the Houses of Parliament calling for a full public inquiry into the phone hacking. Apparently, the actor and his former girlfriend, socialite Jemima Khan, even obtained a court order requiring police to hand over evidence indicating their phones may have been hacked. And now more revelations are yet to be unearthed..this may just be the tip of the ice-berg and it'd cost how many people their jobs is anyone's guess!
Now coming to the end of this month's posting...many of you reading might just be wondering... what is this girl writing? Well, if you carefully observe..you'd know that I am not gratifying corruption in my country by writing about it...I am just trying to communicate that as a commoner these mis-happenings do affect us, our earnings have been swindled and the sheen from our country's image is now missing because of the recent spate and magnitude of scams. But my main purpose of writing in today is because I care and as I write in, I am also a voice. Just as I'd   express pride on my country's achievement and the sacrifices laid down by our forefathers for the principles they stood for and the legacy of freedom they left for us, I shall not fail to highlight my country's shortcoming either!

Hope to hear from you through your comments!
Love,
Sonyaa
