OF FILMS, TELEVISION, AWARDS & MORE... : HAVE YOUR SAY!

Hi Friends!
Welcome to the new year!
I pray that the new year is a new beginning of many good things to come and that your life may be filled with love, hope, fulfillment, happiness and peace!

It's January and the awards season is gradually settling in with nominations being announced (and some of them due anytime from now) from all quarters. It's that time of the year when Hollywood rewards the best talent whose work shone all through and made an impact both at the box office and found a favor with the jury as well (Psst...the latter is quite a formidable task to warm up with the choices of the jury!)

So, let's rewind back to 2013 and recall some of the films we watched or are in our watch-list...

A glimpse of films we saw in 2013...looking back
Last year like any other was an eventful one indeed with varied genres and flavors of films ruling the marquee. So if you had biopics on Steve Jobs, Princess Diana, Formula One Driver Niki Lauda, Julian Assange, Nelson Mandela then you also witnessed stirring dramas with powerful performances in Prisoners, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club,Labor Day, 12 Years a Slave etc.

Life's a party in The Great Gatsby!
And that was not all...you had musicals, costume dramas and comedies too with films like The Great Gatsby,American Hustle, Before Midnight,Her,The Wolf of Wall Street etc. that enjoyed immense popularity among the audiences.

Bat vs Super: Who's your favorite 'Man'?
Then you also had superheroes, action, adventure and sci-fi too with Superman returning with a bang in Man Of Steel (more so since Batman hung up his boots in 2012 it seemed like a natural transition when Superman filled that void and took over the mantle of not just saving Gotham city but the entire world!), Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, The Wolverine, Star Trek Into Darkness,The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,Pacific Rim,Fast & Furious 6,Man of Tai Chi,47 Ronin and The Hobbit:The Desolation of Smaug.

Newton would have been proud of Gravity! ;-)
In 2012,just as Life Of Pi wowed the audiences in 3D with a simple story that touched everyone's hearts, then 2013 was packed with yet another 3D surprise as the audiences watched in awe a spectacular cinematic drama unfolding in space in the film,Gravity as George Clooney and Sandra Bullock orbited around the Earth.

I have just made a mention of some of the films that I off-hand recalled...now it's time you made a list too! Film lovers could use the comment section below to discuss the films they loved,some ground-breaking concepts and stories that cinema as a medium explored which enriched our movie-watching experience or perhaps changed our perspective towards watching films. Some of you could even discuss performances which you feel stood out from the rest while others could discuss contenders, nominations and even possibly predict the winners! I would love to read them all! And if I think you have an important point to make that everyone should know...then I might just feature your comment in my next month's post!

Starters for a discussion could possibly be...
  • Isn't it interesting to know that in all likelihood your favorite on-screen pair of Silver Linings Playbook - Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper could notch up a second consecutive nomination for American Hustle in the Supporting Actor category? Will they win? Who could be their tough contenders in this category?Or could Barkhad Abdi from Captain Phillips be the one? Or Julia Roberts in August:Osage County? Or Sally Hawkins in Blue Jasmine?

  • Could Gravity be the second consecutive 3D film to win the Best Picture at the Oscars? Will Alfonso Cuarón take home the Oscars for the Best Director as well?Could Sandra Bullock register her second win for Gravity?

  • Could Matthew McConaughey take home the Oscar for his maiden nomination (I'm pretty sure of his nomination though!) in Dallas Buyers Club?

These are just a few questions in my mind,I'm sure you have many...so let them just pour in! And I might just chip in too by replying to your comments wherever I do have answers or an opinion to share! :)

Coming to television,I am eagerly looking forward to the Season 3 of Sherlock soon to be aired on BBC One.The question that's on my mind is on everyone's too so we don't need any deduction on that front!

How did Sherlock survive? Clues anyone?
The big question is - how did Sherlock fake his death? How did he survive the Reichenbach Fall? I'm very sure that Molly helped him to. Surely you do remember her saying that she'd do anything for him...but the big question is how did they pull it off? While applying my deduction theories,I was led to a film that I watched some years back and the plot was still afresh in my thoughts as the death sequence had an uncanny semblance particularly the manner in which it unfolded to Sherlock's in The Reichenbach Fall.Could it have unfolded in the reverse order?

The scene in question: Do you remember towards the end when the suspense is revealed we come to know that the day Madeline died,Scottie was in fact chasing her impersonator Judy, atop the bell-tower of the same church where Madeline fell to her death. And all this was in fact a cover-up that was a part of a larger plan to get rid of Madeline's dead body by making it look like a suicide owing to her illness.Could Sherlock have faked his death on those lines except that he used a dummy which Molly could have helped create for him? What are your theories? (Check out the scene from the film Vertigo)

Here's what The Telegraph had to say in this article...
 Pride & Prejudice...a murder mystery?
So, now here's coming to the next television series. Being an ardent fan of Jane Austen's novels,I was naturally quite curious to know what happens next in the lives of Mr. Darcy and Lizzie post-marriage in Pride & Prejudice. The new series titled,'Death Comes To Pemberley' which airs on BBC One sounds more like a dark thriller than a romantic drama from the Victorian era... would Jane Austen have approved of it?What say?I'm sure she was much in love with the idea of Mr. Darcy and Lizzie being in love always even as they'd hold firm to their pride and prejudices till the end...so I don't know how this series would shape up to be! Nevertheless,I just thought I'd make a mention of it so that you all can watch it and let me know your reviews of it!However,it could well surpass our expectations...you never know!

Wide Sargasso Sea - a prequel to Jane Eyre...
Remember the film, Wide Sargasso Sea?It was written as a prequel to Charlotte Brontë's, Jane Eyre.I quite liked the effort in Wide Sargasso Sea as they tried to build up Rochester's character and establish the turbulent relationship he shared with his violently insane wife,Bertha. So,when you watch Jane Eyre it comes as a natural progression to the story as you come to empathize with Rochester all the more and you hope that despite all their social differences,Jane must come back to him.So is it in the case of  'Death Comes To Pemberley' which is l'd call a sequel to Pride & Prejudice. Here,I am guessing that Mr. Darcy's and Lizzie's relationship is put to test but eventually emerges stronger after a bad phase at Pemberley...could it be so? You tell me!

Can you guess who they are? Their initials are M.D.
Another TV movie that had me curious after I read the plot and saw a few stills was-Behind the Candelabra starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon. In fact I was quite surprised to see Michael Douglas in an unusually different role of his career and for that matter even the Bourne Identity actors' identity was unknown to me after I saw these stills! :) At the BAFTA's,I shouldn't be surprised if Michael Douglas takes home an award for his portrayal of a bisexual pianist,Liberace in Behind the Candelabra.

So...now it's time to wrap up this month's post though I could go on and on! I won't repeat myself when I say that I look forward to reading your lovely comments too!
Take care and ciao!
Love,
Sonyaa
