AND THE OSCAR GOES TO...

Hi Friends,

How have you been? How did the month go by? How did you celebrate the leap day? And guys...did you receive any proposal on that day? :-) I hope you accepted it? ;-) If you don't know what I'm talking about...why don't you ask an Irishman about it...he'd tell you a tradition you possibly wouldn't have known of...apparently even I came to know about it through a film. (Hint: Read my blog post of February!)

And yes...did you watch the Oscars? Well...if you're asking me...boy, I surely did! Being a movie buff, I added some good number of films to my watch list! Now that aside...I must say, I love watching the Oscars and the BAFTAs because it's one occasion when you're celebrating the best of Hollywood and world cinema! Howzzat for an explanation by a telly watcher?! Alright here's more...what makes it even more interesting is that it's not just the glamour quotient that runs high in an award ceremony as this but here's a chance to keep abreast of the latest fashion trends, play the game of spot the actor/ actress on the red carpet or even possibly presenting an award and also hear some exclusive on spot snippets of interviews of actors, actresses and prolific film makers whom you seldom see in person...all under one roof!

The winners...
This year,a wide ranging  genres of films like Hugo,The Iron Lady, My Week with Marilyn, The Descendants,The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Moneyball and several others were nominated  at the Oscars...but it was the genius of Michel Hazanavicius's  silent film 'The Artist'  that emerged as a loud and clear winner when it took home 5 awards in the major categories for Best Actor (Jean Dujardin),Best Director,   Best Film,Best Costume Design and Best Original Score!  And yep...Martin Scorsese's Hugo too  swept the technical awards with 5 Oscars to it's kitty!Though bets were  raised for George Clooney's performance in The Descendants... but it was Jean Dujardin who took home the award in his first outing at the Oscars.

Likewise Octavia Spencer won the golden statuette in her maiden nomination for the Best Supporting Actress in The Help  when she beat her co-nominee Jessica Chastain for the same film.
(Did you know that the three leading ladies of 'The Help' - Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain got a nomination each.. Voila! Wonder why Emma Stone was left out though!)

For the Best Actress, this was one category where  I wasn't expecting any surprises whatsoever...Meryl Streep was a clear winner from the start...right from her winning spree which began at the Golden Globes, BAFTA's to the Academy for her stellar performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. So...now that's three cheers...I mean three Oscars for the versatile Meryl Streep! (Though days before the Oscars the internet was buzzing with Viola Davis breaking the clincher!)

That evening it was heartwarming to see Christopher Plummer finally winning an Oscar for the Best Supporting Actor in The Beginners which makes him the oldest actor to win the award even as Plummer's contemporary Max Von Sydow was not that lucky!

Long overdue for an Oscar...
Pssst...I am utterly disappointed with the jury for never having considered the seasoned Peter O'Toole for an Oscar despite 8 nominations in all these years!! Yeah Yeah...I know they gave him an Honorary Award... but that's just like a consolation prize! I hope the octogenarian actor comes up with yet another award winning performance and the Academy is compelled to hand him the Oscar this one last time...he surely deserves it!!

Still buzzing...
It was interesting to note that this year we had entries from Iran and Pakistan that took home Oscars for the Best Foreign Film and Best Documentary for their films 'A Separation' and 'Saving Face'! My heartiest congratulations to Asghar Farhadi and Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy! But India, hello...where are you?

Finally...here are three Oscar moments that became a trending topic on the internet and twitter...

1. Angelina Jolie's leg baring pose stole the show when later Jim Rash (winner of the Best Adapted Screenplay for The Descendants) chose to imitate her on stage!

2. Jean Dujardin dropped the F-bomb in his Oscar acceptance speech and I thought these speeches were meant to be like thanksgiving...but new trend huh!?

3. Jennifer Lopez had a wardrobe malfunction...was it or was it not? I don't think so! All I'd say is that she looked gorgeous in a plunging silver neckline gown by Zuhair Murad!

Okay...now this was the Oscar update for those who missed it...and for those who watched it...you sure know what I was talking about! ;-)

Now it's time to say bbye! But..hey you know you can write in too !I'd love to hear from my readers!
Take care and ciao!!
Love,
Sonyaa
