I was going through some of my collection of film magazines and I came across some interesting events and the 'firsts' in the history of Hollywood and the Oscars which I thought I’d share with you all….so read on and have a lovely evening!!
DID YOU KNOW?
DID YOU KNOW?
- The film Wings released in 1927 was the first and the only silent film to win the Oscar for the Best Picture.
- The first ever tie in the history of the Oscars was in 1931-32 when both Wallace Beery (The Champ) and Frederic March (Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde) won the Best Actor Award
- At one point of time the Best Supporting Actor and Actress received plaques and not Oscars and what more….both these categories were introduced in the year 1936.
- Gone with the Wind (1939) was the first colour film to win the Best Picture Award. It had 13 nominations and won 8 Oscars!!! And to add to this celebration for the first time an Afro- American actress Hattie McDaniel won the Oscar for the Best Supporting Actress. Also the first posthumous award went to Sidney Howard for his screenplay.
- Until 1940, the awards were announced beforehand, but in 1940 it was decided that the winner’s name would be sealed, to be disclosed only when the envelope was opened at the presentation.
- For the first time in 1943 the Oscars were relayed live via radio and even broadcast to the U.S. army overseas!
- Tatum O’Neal became the youngest actress at the age of 10 to win an Oscar for the Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Paper Moon (1973); whereas Marlee Matlin was the youngest actress to win the Oscar for the Best Actress for her performance in Children of a Lesser God (1986). She was just 21 at that time.
- Sophia Loren became the first foreign actress to win the Best Actress Award for her role in the Italian film Two Women released in 1961.
- Among the actors, Jack Nicholson holds the record for maximum nominations and awards. He has earned 11 nominations and won 3 Oscars! And among the actresses it’s Katharine Hepburn and Meryl Streep who have received the most number of nominations, 12 each! Katharine has received four Oscars whereas Meryl Streep has received two.
- The films to win the most number of Oscars are Ben-Hur (1959) and Titanic (1997). Both the films have won 11 Oscars out of 12 and 14 nominations respectively.
- Barry Fitzgerald is the only actor to be nominated for both the leading actor and supporting actor categories and for the same role in the film Going My Way in 1944….and he won the Best Supporting Actor!!
- The films The Turning Point (1977) and The Color Purple (1985) share the dubious distinction of receiving 11 nominations each without winning a single award!!! And what more….both Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole have been nominated 7 times but have not won an Oscar...Sigh!!
- The only performers to win the Oscars consecutively are:
