....AND INDIA SAYS JAI HO! AT THE OSCARS

Finally we did it....and for those of you who missed the action....let me tell you...it rained Oscars as India hit the Jackpot with a film on India that clinched a record of 8 Oscars!!!
8 Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire...the underdog (I mean the film) that surprised Hollywood with a clear sweep which included Best Picture, Best Director,Best Song, Best Musical Score, Best Editing, Best Sound Mixing,Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography!!

And many firsts for India...In all these years after Satyajit Ray and Bhanu Athaiya won two Oscars for India namely Lifetime Acheivement Award for his contribution to Cinema and Best Costume (Gandhi)...this year will be remembered and written in Golden letters in the annals of India's film history when.....

...Slumdog Millionnaire,a film made on India won 8 Oscars and of course another film made on an Indian hero to have achieved this feat of winning 8 Oscars was the film Gandhi!

...'Smile Pinki' a documentary based on a poverty struck young girl's cleft lip that made her a social outcast went on to win yet another Oscar that evening.

...2 Indians took home 3 Oscars!! Two for the musical maestro and composer A R Rahman for Best Musical Score and Best Song and one for Resul Pookutty in the Sound Mixing Category) and of course making Rahman the only Indian to have won two Oscars!!

And with this film and feat, India has marked her presence in the international film markets (of course notwithstanding the criticisms and cynicisms the film received back home) and what's more...let's congratulate Freida Pinto...a birdie just told me that she has bagged a role in Woody Allen's next...yes the same director whose film Vicky Cristina Barcelona won Penelope Cruz an Oscar this year

And of course...some surprises were when.......

...no one expected Slumdog Millionnaire to take home 8 Oscars while some expected it thanks to the film's win at the BAFTA's!

...Brad Pitt (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler and the winner of the Best Actor at the BAFTA's) who were the strong contenders for the Best Actor prize...until Sean Penn came in and took the cake with his sensitive portrayal of the middle-aged gay leader Harvey Milk in the film Milk!

...The Curious Case of Benjamin Button took home just 3 Oscars despite having received 13 nominations

...finally amidst great speculations on whether Heath Ledger should be posthumously be given the Oscar or not was put to rest when he was awarded the Oscar in a Supporting Role for his superb portrayal as the Joker making him the second actor after Peter Finch to receive this honour....and must say he was dearly missed!

Hope you found this posting informative...then do not forget to share your comments and views on the same.
Take care and see you next month,

Hi Sonyaa,
It may be rather late in the day to be comment on the super success of "Slumdog Millionaire". Nevertheless, this movie essentially based on an Indian theme has out perfomed all other movies on every award function in the world. Rightly so which I realised only after watching the movie recently. Truly its the work of a genius to be able to say so many things from different angles and yet keep the narrative going is what amazes me the most.
