Born on the 1st May 1913 in undivided Punjab this actor was one of the most versatile and finest actors of his time- Yes, he is none other than Balraj Sahni. After working as a teacher in Shantiniketan and in BBC as a radio announcer, Sahni went on to pursue his passion for acting. But it was in Bimal Roy's Do Bigha Zameen that his true potential as an actor was realized with the recognition it received world-wide.

The beauty about Balraj Sahni's performances were that he acted in mainstream cinema which had performance oriented characters perfectly etched out for him so much so that one couldn't visualise someone else in his shoes and what more....these mainstream films went on to win critical acclaim! Take the film Do Bigha Zameen which won laurels at the Cannes film festival, the National and Filmfare awards! At least I couldn't imagine someone else playing Shambhu in Do Bigha Zameen. Such was the intensity of his performance that you empathised with his character as the human rickshaw puller who ran bare-foot on the streets of Calcutta to chase a futile dream of repaying his debts which was to recover his do bigha zameen from a greedy zamindar (landlord).

After Do Bigha Zameen followed a string of successes with films like Kabulliwalla, Seema, Garam Hawa, Anmol Ghadi, Pavitra Paapi, Paraya Dhan etc which catapulted him to one of the finest actors of his time known for his neo-realistic performances. The song picturised on him "Ae meri zohra zabeen" from the film Waqt is still a rage even when played today!

Having acted in a Punjabi film "Nanak Dukhiya Sab Sansaar" and being one of the founding members of IPTA (Indian People Theatre Association), Sahni was also a gifted writer who wrote the screenplay of the Dev Anand starrer film Baazi and also went on to direct a film -Laal Batti.

Having won accolades for his performances he was also awarded the Padmashri. But alas he left his fans forever when he passed away on 13th April 1973.The son of the soil is remembered by one and all even today!
